RELAX… if you thought 1984 was the best year for music, you’re not alone. Hits such as Prince’s Purple Rain album, The Red Hot Chili Pepper’s debut, Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s Relax, and the Band Aid belter Do They Know It’s Christmas? all made it a smash hit for fans, a poll found.
The big-hitting year, which also included five top ten singles from Wham! and George Michael (pictured), beat all other years from the 1970s to the 1990s in the poll for Greatest Hits Radio. Second place went to 1985 with 45 per cent choosing the 1980s as their favourite pop decade.
Presenter Pat Sharp said: ‘1984 was an amazing year. I’m not surprised it has been voted the greatest for music and memories, and Band Aid gave us a Christmas to never forget.’
