World Cup protester in a coma

Final: Mr Verzilov’s protest PIC: AP

A FOUNDER of the Pussy Riot protest group, who disrupted July’s World Cup final, is in a coma in hospital in Moscow, amid fears he has been poisoned.

Pyotr Verzilov, 30, went into ‘convulsions’ after going to a court hearing with his girlfriend and fellow-member of the punk collective Veronika Nikulshina, 21. ‘He was quickly getting worse, he had convulsions,’ she said.

‘On the way to the ambulance, he started to rave. He was in a kind of semi-conscious condition, he stopped recognising me.’

News website Meduza said doctors told his family he had overdosed or was given too much medicine.

But friends insisted Mr Verzilov (pictured), who has been in hospital since Tuesday, had not been taking medication or using drugs.

Pussy Riot has been one of the most vocal opponents of the Russian regime.

Mr Verzilov and others served 15 days in jail for the protest against excessive police powers at July’s final in Moscow.
