World champ’s dad shot in gun killing at boxing club

Coach: Pete Taylor with Katie PICTURE: PA

THE dad of world and Olympic boxing champion Katie Taylor was injured in a shooting that left another man dead.

Pete Taylor was at a training session with 20 others at a boxing club near Dublin when a gunman burst in just before 7am yesterday.

A man aged 50 was killed, while Mr Taylor, 57, and a 35-year-old man had to be taken to hospital with gunshot wounds described by police as ‘very serious’ but not life-threatening.

The attack at Bray Boxing Club — where Ireland’s London 2012 gold medal winner Katie was coached to glory by her English-born dad — may have been random. Police said they were unaware of any threats being made to members. Supt Pat Ward said: ‘It was a normal session on a normal day and it was being undertaken by people who normally undertake that session in the early hours of the morning. This came totally out of the blue.’

The gunman, wearing a helmet or balaclava, fled in a silver VW Caddy van with Northern Ireland plates. He may have had an accomplice. ‘We don’t know if there was anyone else in that van with him,’ Mr Ward said.

‘That’s something that we are trying to find out.’
