We’ve owned building 50 years and didn’t know

Surprise: Jean Hunt with committee members PICTURE: SWNS

A CLUB of pensioners who tried to end their tenancy at a Grade II-listed property were stunned to be told they had owned it for more than 50 years.

Tiverton Senior Citizens Group wrote to Sir Ian Amory, who they thought owned Amory House, saying they no longer needed the 18th century building after using it rent free for years.

But Sir Ian said it had been given to the Devon group by his relatives in 1964, and they were free to sell or rent it out. Club chairwoman Jean Hunt, 83, said: ‘It does feel like a lottery win.’
