The lowdown on singer and footballer Chelcee Grimes

Chelcee wrote her debut single, Just Like That, in ten minutes

‘I was recording another song and was beatboxing in the booth to warm up and the producer recorded what I was doing — it started there. I wrote it in ten minutes — it rolled off the tongue. I’m quite an instinctive writer and usually go with the first thing that comes out of my mouth.’

Chelcee’s pop journey hasn’t run smoothly

‘I got signed at 19 [she’s now 26] but I got dropped after six months. It was the best year of my life and the worst. I spent a few years writing songs and working out what sort of artist I wanted to be. I re-signed to the label last year for a lot more money. I play football and that mindset has been drilled into me — never say never. You can be three-nil down at half-time but can still come back and win.’

Chelcee writes for acts such as Little Mix and Kylie Minogue

‘I’ve got two songs on Dua Lipa’s album. Being a songwriter is another source of income — she can be performing my songs in Japan when I’m asleep and I’ll still be making money. I usually meet the people I write for — I like getting to know them. If you write in the same room as them, you have to give them 50 per cent of the money from the song. But if you’re willing to give up that 50 per cent to be in the room with that artist, you might form a great connection and work on four songs with them, instead of getting 100 per cent from one song.’

The video for Just Like That features sex-crazed pensioners rampaging around a trailer park

‘The song’s tongue-in-cheek but it has a sexy lyric. I didn’t want to be oiled up, gyrating over someone, it’s not my personality, so when the director suggested this idea I thought it was great.’

Chelcee plays football for Fulham

‘I played for Liverpool from the age of ten to 16 but I couldn’t go professional as there wasn’t much money in the women’s game. Now I play for Fulham. I’m living my dream. If the ten-year-old me could see me now she’d be very happy. I’m touring now, which will mean I miss out on a bit of football, but I want to try to do both for as long as possible.’

Singles Just Like That and I Need A Night Out are out now. She plays the Camden Assembly on Oct 23,
