‘Update rules’ on election spending

RULES on election spending on platforms like Facebook need to be updated to keep pace with modern technology, a report has warned.

Public confidence in the voting system could be shaken unless the law adapts to changes brought by social media, says the study by the Joseph Rowntree Reform Trust.

Paying for political advertising on social media should be banned — as it is on TV — the authors say.

They want the maximum parties can spend on national campaigns to be cut to ensure elections are not won ‘on the basis of who has most money’.
