A WOMAN accused a student of rape after he appeared on University Challenge, a court heard.
Bartholomeo Joly de Lotbiniere is alleged to have had sex with the woman as she tried to push him off at York University after a night out in the city in June 2014.
In a police video interview played to jurors, the student, 19, explained why she reported the incident to police more than a year later in August 2015. She said: ‘It took a while to, sort of, sink in, what he did.
‘Then, basically, he was on University Challenge and it was all over social media and certain tweets. I just wanted to do something about it.
‘I just got angry and upset. Yeah, it has really got to me.’
Two days after the alleged attack, she had texted Joly de Lotbiniere saying: ‘I thought I’d let you know I wasn’t overly comfortable with what happened on Thursday night.’
He replied: ‘Neither am I. I was a disgrace, I did a very stupid thing and I am very sorry. I just hope you can forgive me at some point.’
Joly de Lotbiniere, 21, of Kensal Rise, north-west London, denies rape and assault by penetration.
The hearing continues at York crown court.
