A PREGNANT woman discovered dead with her unborn baby girl cut out of her womb was allegedly killed so a friend obsessed with becoming a mother could steal her child.
Flavia Godinho Mafra was 36 weeks pregnant when her husband and mother found her body in a disused pottery yard in Canelinha, a town in southern Brazilian state Santa Catarina.
The 24-year-old was reportedly lured to a fake baby shower by the old school friend, whose partner is said to have admitted using a brick to kill her.
Police later found the child had been taken to hospital by the suspect and her husband, who were both arrested.
Mrs Mafra’s school friend confessed to having developed a fixation with stealing a child after she suffered a miscarriage in January, officers said.
The detective responsible for the case, Paulo Alexandre Freyesleben e Silva, confirmed the cause of death was a sharp cut to the abdomen and wounds from a brick. Last night the baby remained in the Children’s Hospital of Florianopolis, where she had been given antibiotics and pain medication but was in good health.
A post-mortem examination will confirm if the baby was removed when her mother was still alive.
Mrs Mafra, a supply teacher, was buried in the Municipal Cemetery of Canelinha after a brief ceremony.
