THREE people have been publicly whipped 100 times each in Indonesia’s deeply conservative Aceh province.
A 22-year-old woman, caned for having pre-marital sex, cried as she pleaded with an officer to stop. Her boyfriend, also 22, and a 19-year-old man, punished for having sex with a minor, were also flogged in a stadium in Lhokseumawe, as dozens watched.
The couple walked free, while the teenager will also serve five years in prison. Criticised as cruel by rights groups, caning is used for a range of offences in the Sumatran province — the only one in Indonesia to impose Islamic law. President Joko Widodo has called for it to end.
