Thousands queue for ‘fish therapy’ asthma cure

Looking for a cure: A man prepares to swallow a live fish to banish his asthma

THOUSANDS of asthma sufferers have joined a bizarre ritual to try to cure their attacks — by swallowing live fish.

The footage below shows officials putting small murrel fish stuffed with a herbal ‘medicinal’ paste in visitors’ mouths at Nampally exhibition centre in Hyderabad, southern India.

The fish are believed to clear obstructions in the throat, while curing asthma and other respiratory problems in the process.

The annual event, organised by the Bathini family from Telangana, on the centre-south stretch of the Indian peninsula, is so popular that local travel restrictions are enforced and special buses laid on to ferry visitors to and from the venue.
