AT LEAST 150,000 people were evacuated from their homes after wildfires raging in southern California destroyed hundreds of buildings and left one person critically injured.

A fire erupted on Tuesday afternoon in San Bernardino, east of Los Angeles, as three other wildfires in the region burned some 200 houses.

Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti said the blaze remained ‘out of control’ and the seasonal 50mph Santa Ana winds continued to fan the flames.

Incident commander Todd Derum said he suspected hundreds more homes had been destroyed on top of 150 already ravaged by a fire in Ventura County.
