Shock of the bay: No.1 picnic spot Three Cliffs can take the breath away PICTURES: ALAMY

IF THE wind’s up you might get a few grains of sand in your sandwiches — but there’s nowhere better in Britain to enjoy a picnic than breathtaking Three Cliffs Bay.

En-deer-ing: Richmond Park provides oasis for Londoners

The beach, on the Gower Peninsula in south Wales, has beaten beauty spots across the UK to be voted the No.1 place to unpack your hamper.

Padley Gorge in the Peak District, with its mystical scenery and babbling brook, claimed second place. And splendid Aberporth beach in west Wales came third.

The top ten also includes London’s Richmond Park — home to free-roaming red deer — according to a poll by DisneyLife. Kyoto Gardens in Holland Park was also a favoured spot for al fresco dining in the capital.

Wales had three top ten entries, with 13th century Dolbadarn Castle in Snowdonia taking the final place.
