A FESTIVALGOER who died after running into the flames of a giant wooden effigy was a married 41-year-old.
Aaron Mitchell, a Swiss-based American, broke through security cordons as a crowd of around 50,000 watched the ceremony at the Burning Man festival on Saturday. He was pulled out by firefighters but suffered fatal burns.
‘We don’t know if it was intentional or if it was induced by drugs,’ said sheriff Jerry Allen of Pershing county, Nevada.
He said Mr Mitchell had not been drinking but a toxicology report is pending. He added that people try to run into the fire ‘as part of their spiritual portion of Burning Man’. ‘It’s just kind of a rebirth,’ he said.
