The Archers Peggy: I’ll carry on as I turn 100

THE Archers actress June Spencer says she has no plans to retire as she looks forward to her 100th birthday on Friday.

The star (pictured), who plays matriarch Peggy Woolley, is the only original cast member still in the BBC Radio 4 drama, which began in 1950.

She said: ‘As soon as I start being more trouble than I’m worth, I shall stop. I just love it. I think it’s what keeps me going.’ June, who is thought to be the world’s longest-serving soap actress, said turning 100 felt ‘pretty good’. She joked: ‘My character, Peggy, is about five years younger than I am. She has to be helped into cars, I don’t.’

She added: ‘I’m an optimist. I enjoy life.’

June’s co-stars have called for her to be made a Dame.
