A DRIVER who left a woman with brain damage when he reversed over her ‘in an act of supreme stupidity’ to collect a £1 parking refund has been jailed.
John Salamacha (pictured) ploughed into Peter and Marlene Hoult, who were in their 60s, as he reversed at 14mph down a one-way busy shopping street when he realised he had failed to collect his refund in Leicester city centre.
Mrs Hoult smashed her head on the pavement when Salamacha backed up ten car lengths along Church Gate in October 2015.
She was left in a dementia-like state and, although discharged, died last year of unrelated causes. Salamacha, 54, of Leicester, admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving and was jailed for ten months at the city’s crown court.
He was also banned from driving for three years. Judge Nicholas Dean QC told him: ‘The death was unrelated to these injuries but it marred the last year or so the couple had together.’
He said the defendant was ‘a good man, an impeccable family man’ and ‘deeply remorseful’.
