Supermarket salute! Tesco staff give NHS workers a hero’s welcome

THEY are on the front line of the fight against Covid-19 so it’s only fitting that NHS workers are treated as heroes.

And those arriving for a special shopping hour set aside for them were given a guard of honour by grateful supermarket staff.

Aisle be there for you: Medical staff get a round of applause

The NHS workers were greeted with applause from store employees who had lined up on either side of the entrance of the Tesco Extra in the Llansamlet area of Swansea. Amid empty shelves and with rationing on certain items, supermarkets have introduced specific slots so doctors, nurses and colleagues can buy what they need when they are not working their shifts.

Tesco is allowing NHS workers to shop for an hour each day before the store opens to the public. Similar schemes are also in place for vulnerable and elderly customers.

Meanwhile, a worried doctor in London made an emotional phone call to LBC radio during his break to plead with people to ‘just stay on your sofas’. ‘Jack’ also suggested that, once the virus is contained, a sign of thanks to NHS staff would be no longer having to ask patients not to abuse A&E staff.
