LITTLE Stellan Smith wanted a sunflower ‘as tall as the house’ — and his dad rose to the challenge with this 21ft plant.
Douglas Smith planted the seed in March and it proved a soaraway success, sprouting above their home in Stanstead Abbotts, Hertfordshire.
Now he has to climb a ladder to water his lockdown gardening project and has tied the plant to a stake ‘like a flagpole’.
The 42-year-old said Stellan, four, asked earlier this year for ‘a sunflower as tall as the house’. He added: ‘I don’t think people at his nursery believe him when he tells them he actually has one.’
Douglas admits the plant had a ‘genetic’ boost as he got the seed from John Butler, who holds the current record for tallest sunflower in North America.
But he said it is unlikely to match Britain’s 26ft record-holder. ‘It’s probably got an inch or two left,’ he said.
