A ‘BUNCH of idiots’ who climbed Ben Nevis wearing trainers during Storm Ciara are ‘lucky to be alive’ after volunteers rescued them.
The quartet had become separated when they were found near the 4,411ft summit during a freezing blizzard with 80mph winds.
John Stevenson, of Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team, said they were given ‘a piece of our minds’. ‘It was sheer stupidity,’ he said. ‘We had to cut footsteps in the ice to get three of them down. They would not have survived the night — no way.’
The four, thought to be Glasgow students, were airlifted from lower down the peak and taken to hospital.
