A GAMING fanatic plunged to his death while playing online with friends after climbing on to a balcony to get a better signal.
Student Pattanadej Homhuan, 21, was staying at a hotel in Bangkok before a gaming tournament.
He was taking part in a Realm of Valor (RoV) game with friends when he complained on the chat function that his smartphone reception was poor.
Friends said he clambered on to the fourth-floor room’s narrow balcony at about 1am on Wednesday. But they only noticed something was wrong when his on-screen character had not moved for several minutes.
They went to his room and looked out of the window at the Hip Bangkok hotel and saw a security guard standing over a body below.
The student was pronounced dead at the scene.
His friends told police they were all from the Rajamangala University of Technology Lanna in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand, and were in Bangkok to compete as a team for the RoV Pro League Season 3 tournament. ‘Pattanadej complained about a poor signal and I saw him walking out to play on the balcony,’ said one friend. ‘And that was the last time we saw him.’
Security guard Nuan Sriboonruang, 28, said: ‘I came to check the front of the hotel after hearing a loud noise. I saw him lying unconscious, covered with blood, so I called the rescuers.’
Police are treating the death as an accident. Insp Suchin Phonprapaponchai said: ‘A friend noticed his character did not move so checked the balcony and saw he had fallen down.’
