Strewth! Giant hailstones bring a fright Christmas to Sydney

Golf-ball size: Some of the unseasonable Sydney hailstones were 2in in diameter

SYDNEY is the last place you’d expect to see a white Christmas. But these golf-ball size hailstones brought a shiver of winter to the Australian city and disrupted travel.

Cars were damaged as the rocks of ice rained down, shattering windscreens. Flights were also delayed, as the Bureau of Meteorology confirmed hailstones had fallen which were 2in in diameter.

Emergency services urged people to stay indoors and advised drivers to move their cars under cover.

Christopher Sharp, who lives in the city’s Paddington area, told the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper: ‘When I went outside just now, the street was lined with men checking the roofs of their cars for damage.’
