RECORD numbers of potentially deadly Portuguese men o’ war have washed up on the Cornish coast, prompting coastguards to issue a safety warning and close a beach at Perranporth.
The Cornwall Wildlife Trust said 144 have been seen in the last three days, compared to three last year. The tentacled organism — not a jellyfish — has a sting which can be fatal.
The RNLI said: ‘If sighted, do not touch. If you are stung, seek assistance from the RNLI.’
