SOUND the incoming alarm, Houston, we have an incoming trend. And this one may as well be from outer space as it’s so… out of this world.
Ladies and gentlemen, introducing the pantashoe — a pointed stiletto shoe built in to a pair of ‘high rise, slimming’ (ahem) spandex leggings.
Balenciaga’s creative director, Demna Gvasalia, is known for his boundary-pushing looks and these bants (boot pants), are part of the much-awaited exclusive Net-A-Porter x Balenciaga collaboration, retailing at a princely £1,780.
Of course, the collection — and in particular this chain-link fabric — has already been all over Instagram, yet the pantashoe poses more questions than it answers.
Firstly, what do you do if you go to a no-shoes-allowed house? Take off your entire bottom half? And what about breaking a heel? It’s no laughing matter in these bad boys, is it? The wait at the heel bar would be excruciatingly embarrassing — not to mention chilly. How on earth do you get them on? And off? When will Kim Kardashian be seen out in a pair?
And then there’s the sizing conundrum. If I’m selling you the legging shoe, I have bad news. The Balenciaga version has sold out in all but one size. The only ones left on the website are a size ten waist with a size five shoe — and it’s a pretty stiff requirement to be exactly the right dress and shoe size for a garment.
Still, fear not, the pantashoe has already spawned several cheaper imitations, which means it will be coming to a high street near you, soon! nicole mowbray
