State of Mississippi to rid its flag of racist motif

THE US state of Mississippi is set to redesign its flag and remove the Confederate battle emblem that is broadly condemned as racist.

Years of campaigning has gathered pace in recent weeks as protests against racial injustice spread across the US and beyond, with legislators urged to ditch the 126-year-old banner for one that better reflects the diversity of a state with a 38 per cent black population.

Republican governor Tate Reeves has backed the move to erase the controversial motif.

He tweeted: ‘The argument over the 1894 flag has become as divisive as the flag itself and it’s time to end it.’
