Spanish star Andrés Iniesta faces backlash over ‘blackface’

Red card offence: Iniesta’s picture caused a social media storm

EX-BARCELONA footballer Andrés Iniesta has become embroiled in a race row after posting a snap of himself posing with two men in ‘blackface’ make-up online.

The 34-year-old, a World Cup winner with Spain in 2010, uploaded the picture — also featuring his wife and two children — alongside a group celebrating the Christian festival of Three Kings Day in his homeland.

Many fans expressed their disgust at his tweet.

BBC Radio 1 Extra DJ Nick Bright wrote: ‘I cannot believe in 2019 famous people are still around people doing ‘blackface’ and tweeting it. Where are your friends Iniesta?!’ Journalist and author Musa Okwonga added: ‘I love Iniesta like few other public figures… [but] this is not cool. It’s very disappointing.’

Iniesta, who has 23.8million Twitter followers and now plays in Japan for Vissel Kobe, has not yet responded to the criticism.
