THE US state of South Carolina has moved another step closer to banning nearly all abortions.
A small group of senators held a hearing yesterday over whether to outlaw terminations after a foetal heartbeat is detected — around six weeks into pregnancy.
The bill easily passed the South Carolina House earlier this year and is enthusiastically supported by the state’s governor Henry McMaster (pictured).
But some backers are not sure it can get the two-thirds support needed to overcome hurdles when it moves to the next stage, the Senate.
Supporters hope the hearing will give the bill more time to pass when the state’s legislature returns in January.
Several states have passed similar bans, but are being held up by court challenges.
