A POLICE officer assaulted on duty five years ago has finally received a compensation cheque — for 30p.
PC Paul Church was so arrested by the tiny cheque he tweeted a picture of it and asked the public for help with what he could spend his ‘windfall’ on.
One person suggested a Freddo chocolate bar while Twitter account UK Cop Humour put forward Tesco Value custard creams.
Twitter users branded the cheque ‘disgraceful’ while others pointed out it would have cost more to post it out.
The roads policing officer, who has been with the Surrey force 17 years, said it was part payment for the assault. ‘Generous members of public who felt moved by the above have asked what charity they could send a donation to so thought I’d create an official page for a deserving charity,’ he said. He is fundraising for the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance.
A Surrey Police spokesman said: ‘He’s used to surprises, as they’re often part of the job. While the assault had long since faded from memory, he and others were quick to see the funny side.’
