SIR IAN McKELLEN is to reprise his role as Hamlet — almost 50 years after he first appeared as the ‘young’ prince.
The Lord Of The Rings star, 81, will take the lead in an ‘age-blind’ production of Shakespeare’s play at the Theatre Royal Windsor.
It will be directed by Sean Mathias and is produced by Bill Kenwright. Sir Ian said: ‘I feel lucky to be working again, thanks to Bill Kenwright’s inspiring optimism and Sean Mathias’s invitation to re-examine Hamlet, 50 years on from my first go. So we will meet again.’
Rehearsals are due to start on Monday. The performance is billed as the first major new theatre production to start rehearsals in the UK since auditoriums went dark in March.
