SIMON HARMER saved Essex with the bat before causing panic with the ball in their County Championship clash with Nottinghamshire at Chelmsford.
Harmer (pictured) scored an invaluable 43 runs during an 81-run stand with Peter Siddle for the ninth wicket after Nottinghamshire, led by Luke Fletcher — who celebrated his fifth career five-wicket haul — and spinner Matt Carter had ripped Essex’s middle-order apart.
Having secured a 54-run first-innings lead, Harmer’s spin then claimed four for 32, including two wickets in two balls.
The South African’s efforts meant Nottinghamshire ended on 90 for six, with a lead of 36 and battling to save the match.
It’s no sight for sore eyes but David avoids Payne in the neck
GLOUCESTERSHIRE bowler David Payne avoided injury when a sightscreen panel collapsed on top of him in the County Championship Division Two match with Glamorgan at Newport. He then took two wickets in three balls as the hosts were reduced to 241 for eight — needing another 73 runs to avoid following on against Gloucestershire, who finished on 463.
