Rugby World Cup briefing: Scotland’s Gregor Townsend bemused by crooked decision

Townsend bemused by crooked decision

GREGOR TOWNSEND has questioned the penalty which means Japan could still qualify from Pool A even if they lose to Scotland on Sunday. A stoppage-time try saw the hosts secure a bonus point in Saturday’s 38-19 win after Samoa were pulled up for a crooked put-in. Scotland coach Townsend (pictured) said: ‘It’s an incredible call. There is more latitude for the scrum-half putting the ball into the scrum because you are the team who has won the scrum. To see it in the World Cup surprised me. To see it in added-on time was an even bigger surprise.’

‘Something I’ve looked forward to my whole career is to play against South Africa. Now at my last World Cup, it’s quite special’ — Glasgow Warriors wing DTH van der Merwe is looking forward to playing for adopted nation Canada against the country of his birth in Kobe today
