Rugby World Cup briefing: Joe Schmidt’s staying ice cool on Johnny Sexton

Thigh’s the limit: Sexton PICTURE: GETTY

Ireland 35-0 Russia

JOHNNY SEXTON is expected to be fit for Ireland’s match with Samoa despite icing his troublesome thigh after being withdrawn yesterday.

Captaining his country for the first time, the fly-half was replaced by Jack Carty for the second half of Ireland’s five-try win.

But head coach Joe Schmidt still believes Sexton, who missed the shock 19-12 defeat to Japan with a thigh issue, and late withdrawal Joey Carbery will be ready for Ireland’s final Pool A encounter in Fukuoka on Saturday, October 12.

‘Johnny’s all good and will be fine for Samoa, and Joey is good,’ said Schmidt ‘I think Joey would have been okay to play but Conor Murray was very keen to play. So Joey is hopefully fine.’

■ 2 — Tries for winger Semi Radradra, who also helped create Fiji’s first three scores, as they beat Georgia 45-10
