XHERDAN SHAQIRI believes Liverpool possess the same winning mentality he saw while playing for serial Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have lost just once this season and top the Premier League heading into tonight’s trip to West Ham.
The Reds are seeking to win their first title since 1990 and while only James Milner (with Manchester City) and Daniel Sturridge (who had limited exposure with Chelsea) have an English league winners’ medal, Shaqiri — who has twice won the German title — feels there is the necessary know-how in the squad.
‘I played in Germany and won titles there, so I have experience of it,’ said the Switzerland international, who also won three championships with Basle.
‘It has to be a winning mentality and the players need to be focused.
‘The mentality is similar [here]. You need to go into games trying to win them and to give everything to do that.
‘I am pretty sure with the talent we have in the team we can achieve a lot.
‘Now we need to keep going this hard until the end. To work hard in training, to take the training into the games and to keep going.
‘There is a long way to go but we’re in a very, very good way to be successful.’
The midweek draw with Leicester was seen by some fans as a missed chance to stretch their lead over City, who lost at Newcastle the previous night, but Shaqiri feels the players do not share the same concerns. He added: ‘Everything is good, so we will just keep going like this.
‘If we continue to stay focused at the highest level, I am confident we are going to win games.’
Virgil Van Dijk and Joel Matip are Klopp’s only fit centre-backs as Dejan Lovren’s hamstring issue has recurred, while a setback to Joe Gomez’s recovery may lead to surgery on his broken leg.
