PRINCE CHARLES teased pop star Cheryl about her name changes as he praised her for supporting his Prince’s Trust.
The prince had an audience in stitches in London yesterday when he told them: ‘I thought to myself some time ago “Who’s Cheryl Tweedy?” I suddenly realised I knew the Cheryl bit but missed out on the Tweedy.
‘But I’m enormously grateful to her for raising £1million.’
The former X Factor judge and stars including Ant and Dec, Olivia Colman, Tom Hardy and Helen McCrory were at the Prince’s Trust awards at the Palladium. Cheryl, 34, spoke passionately about her own project The Prince’s Trust Cheryl Trust Centre in Newcastle, which helps almost 4,000 disadvantaged young people in the north-east.
She said: ‘It’s inspiring for me because you get to see the people that are transforming in front of your eyes.’
Over the years she has gone from her maiden name Tweedy to Cole when she wed footballer Ashley to Fernandez-Versini, during her marriage to Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini then back to plain Cheryl.
Last month she and former One Direction star Liam Payne put on a public display of affection after rumours their romance was on the rocks. They have a son, Bear, one.
