BBC's top novels: JK Rowling's Harry Potter books make the list PICTURE: PA

JK ROWLING’S Harry Potter books feature alongside classics such as Jane Austen’s Pride And Prejudice in a landmark new BBC list of 100 important English language novels.

The selection has been drawn up by a panel of leading British writers and critics to kick-start the broadcaster’s year-long celebration of literature.

Also on the list, recent reads such as Bridget Jones’s Diary, by Helen Fielding, and Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials rub shoulders with works including George Eliot’s Middlemarch and George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four.

Special programmes across TV, radio and online start on BBC Two from Saturday, with Novels That Shaped Our World.
