A DRIVER who tossed a cigarette end out of his Porsche’s window has been hit with a bill for £1,600.
Manoj Karpal, 42, refused to pay a £90 fixed penalty after being spotted in his home town Coalville, Leicestershire.
He claimed he ‘could not remember’ who was driving the white sports car last December.
But Loughborough magistrates found his evidence ‘confused and not credible’ and convicted him of littering. They fined him £692 and ordered him to pay £881 costs plus a £69 surcharge.
North West Leicestershire District Council, which prosecuted Karpal, said the bill sent a ‘strong message’ to other motorists.
A spokesman said: ‘Drivers throwing litter from cars is damaging to the environment and offensive to anyone that wants to walk down the street or through our countryside without seeing litter everywhere.
‘Being in a car won’t protect litterers from receiving fines and legal action.’
