Police officer suffers broken skull in hit-and-run

AN INVESTIGATION has been launched after a police officer was hit by a car in Coventry while trying to pull it over.

A male officer from West Midlands Police was taken to hospital yesterday after the collision in Holbrooks Lane, Radford, shortly before 2.45pm.

While attempting to stop the car, the officer was run over before the driver fled from the scene.

The officer, who has not been named, was taken to hospital with a fractured skull and injuries to his leg.

Dumped: The vehicle with smashed light and cracked windscreen

The car involved in the incident was recovered nearby and officers are attempting to trace the driver.

Willenhall Neighbourhood Police have reviewed CCTV from the area and traffic was redirected throughout the afternoon.

Ch Supt Mike O’Hara said: ‘It is completely unacceptable for a police officer to be injured in the line of duty.

‘He has been taken to hospital for treatment and we await further updates on his injuries. We will be offering the officer and his family our full support.

‘Enquiries are well under way to trace the driver and I would urge them to do the right thing and come forward.’

Officers have asked anyone with information to contact West Midlands Police through their website live chat or by calling 101.
