THIS was the scene yesterday after a jet with 177 people on board skidded off a runway in bad weather and broke into three pieces.
One person died and at least 157 people were injured in the crash at Istanbul’s Sabiha Gokcen airport.
Passengers were seen climbing out through gaping holes in the fuselage. NTV television reported that the plane caught fire but the blaze had been extinguished. Footage showed emergency services entering the flood-lit airliner.
The jet — a Boeing 737 belonging to low-cost carrier Pegasus — had flown in from Izmir. The airport was shut and flights were being diverted. Turkey’s transportation ministry described the incident as a ‘rough landing’.
Last month, another Pegasus plane skidded off the runway at the same airport. No one was injured.
