‘Period poverty’ hits 137,000 girls

MORE than 137,000 girls have missed school in the last year because they couldn’t afford sanitary products, a study revealed.

Seven per cent of girls were absent for an average of five days due to feelings of ‘embarrassment’ and ‘shame’.

Sanitary pad manufacturer Always, which commissioned the poll of ten to 18-year-olds, said the findings showed ‘period poverty is a widespread problem in the UK’.

It is donating 5million sanitary pads to schools to enable girls to ‘achieve their full potential’.
