UNAI EMERY has shrugged off suggestions he has fallen out with Mesut Ozil, insisting he has a good relationship with the playmaker.
The Arsenal manager is adamant he wants to help the mercurial midfielder, who has been linked with Turkish club Fenerbahce.
Ozil, who signed a fresh deal to stay at the Emirates Stadium last term, has quit the German national team and has been training at the club during the international break.
There were rumours of a bust-up between player and coach before the 3-1 win at home to West Ham at the end of last month when Ozil missed the game through illness.
But ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Newcastle, Emery insisted: ‘[We get on] very well.
‘I’ve a very good relationship with Mesut and professionally I push him for improvements to give us the best in his qualities and performances.’
The Spaniard believes Arsenal can reap the benefit of 29-year-old Ozil’s international retirement, which followed an ignominious World Cup exit and accusations of racism within German football.
Emery feels Ozil has enjoyed a rest, saying: ‘The players have the habit of playing in the international break, in important matches.
‘When one player stops doing that, I think it is also good for them to focus only on their team.Mesut, like other players, works very well here.’
Arsenal return to action at St James’s Park with the squad carrying no fresh injury concerns. Meanwhile, Emery insists he has had no indication from chief executive Ivan Gazidis he is set to jump ship and leave for AC Milan.
Gazidis oversaw the appointment of Arsene Wenger’s replacement in May but speculation he is about to depart for Italy has intensified this week.
Emery maintains he is in the dark and added: ‘First of all, every conversation with him is speaking about us and about our work here every day.
‘I don’t know any other news from him. Every conversation with me is about us. About our performance. About our ideas. Our process.
‘We didn’t speak [about his future]. I think it is one question for him.’
