Olive, 95, is Jamaican us all hungry for Caribbean food

MAMA knows best how to cook the old family recipes — which is why 95-year-old Olive Brown is bringing her Caribbean cuisine to market.

Proving it is never too old to start a business, the pensioner has joined her son Carlton in launching Mama Brown’s — a range of six different flavours of rum cake and jerk seasonings — as well as Olive’s favourite rum punch.

Plenty of spirit: Olive’s rum cakes

Carlton, from Chingford in Essex, said his grandfather opened one of the first grocery shops in Mount Diablo, near Linstead, Jamaica, so ‘food and business are both in the blood’.

He added: ‘Growing up, my mother was always cooking or baking and, if someone was getting married, she would always want to get involved and cook things like Jamaican patties.

‘Jerk chicken with rice and peas was a Sunday favourite and mum was always going to the markets to source the freshest spices and seasonings. She was an entrepreneur herself.’

After two years of development, the range is now available via Amazon.
