Oddballs: Koke makes sure Atletico Madrid still gain from flower power

ATLETICO Madrid captain Koke phoned one of the club’s most celebrated fans to help continue her long tradition of laying flowers on the pitch — and the act proved a good luck charm.

Margarita Luengo, 73, has placed a bouquet of flowers at a corner flag before every home game since 1996 but was unable to go to Saturday’s match against Real Valladolid due to Spain’s ban on fans in stadiums.

But Koke (pictured) ensured the tradition was preserved, placing the flowers at her chosen corner of the pitch at the Wanda Metropolitano.

‘Let’s hope they bring us luck and we win and score a goal from a corner,’ said the midfielder and his words rang true as he took the corner from which Vitolo headed in the only goal in the 81st minute to give Atletico victory.
