Nurse who ‘loved his job’ dies after treating infected coronavirus patient

Self-isolating: Thomas Harvey, 57, ‘was not offered test’

A ‘DEVOTED’ NHS nurse has died of suspected coronavirus after treating an infected patient without protection.

Father-of-seven Thomas Harvey collapsed on Sunday after being sent home to self-isolate.

Colleagues at Goodmayes Hospital in Ilford, east London, said he had not been wearing personal protective equipment because of shortages. They added he was not offered a Covid-19 test despite displaying symptoms.

A GoFundMe page set up to pay his funeral costs has raised £11,000. A tribute on the site said Mr Harvey, 57, ‘loved his job’ and ‘went beyond the call of duty’.

Ilford South MP Sam Tarry wrote on Twitter: ‘It was found he had no adequate PPE and no access to #COVID19 testing.’ North East London NHS trust said the hospital followed national PPE guidance.
