No stomach for Donald Trump, but Jeremy Corbyn did dine with Xi Jinping

Banquet: Xi and Corbyn PICTURE: GETTY

JEREMY CORBYN was accused of hypocrisy over his refusal to attend the state banquet with Donald Trump despite sitting down for dinner with Chinese president Xi Jinping.

The Labour leader accepted an invitation to the event at Buckingham Palace in 2015 and has also been criticised for hosting Hamas, Hezbollah and IRA delegations in the Commons.

‘I talked to Jeremy Corbyn at the state banquet for unelected Xi Jinping, but he boycotts the elected president of the United States,’ said former Australian High Commissioner Alexander Downing. ‘What are the real values of the modern left?’

Human rights group Amnesty International has accused China of carrying out more executions than any nation and is thought to have sent more than 1million ethnic Muslim Uyghurs to ‘re-education’ camps.

Shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry revealed she had written to the palace asking not to be invited in Mr Corbyn’s place to the banquet.

‘The things I want to say to Donald Trump I probably should not say in front of Her Majesty,’ she told ITV’s Good Morning Britain. ‘He is a sexual predator, he is a racist and it’s right to say that. We need to think about when our country got so scared.’
