A 20-YEAR grudge between Lorraine Kelly and Tory leadership candidate Esther McVey was exposed live on air on Good Morning Britain yesterday.
Ms McVey, who used to work in television before becoming an MP in 2010, was appearing as a guest on the ITV show to outline her policies.
She was still smiling on the sofa as the programme cut to the Lorraine studio for a live link.
‘Do you remember Esther McVey from her GMTV days?’ host Susanna Reid asked Kelly as the MP looked nervously on.
‘Yes. Yes, I do,’ Kelly replied curtly.
‘So you got on with Esther then, Lorraine,’ co-host Piers Morgan teased.
‘I don’t, I don’t remember love, I don’t remember at all, I really don’t,’ she stammered. ‘It was an awfully long time ago.’
‘Ooh, if looks could kill she’d be six feet under,’ Morgan replied. The clear antipathy sparked frenzied speculation among viewers over what had passed between the two when Ms McVey stood in as maternity cover for Fiona Phillips on GMTV in 1999.
‘I love that Lorraine Kelly manages to pretend to like Piers Morgan but clearly hates Esther McVey so much that she’s physically unable to even force a smile when she’s mentioned,’ tweeted Jay#JFT96. While @jackiehandleyva added: ‘So WHATS the story here @EstherMcVey1 & @reallorraine sharing the most awkward of moments on @GMB you could have cut that atmosphere with a knife.’
Hours later Ms McVey gave an inkling into the bust-up when she was challenged about it at her official campaign launch. ‘We used to share a dressing room and she used to do the programme afterwards and was partnered with Eamonn Holmes. Then I was promoted to be partnering with [Holmes],’ the MP said. ‘But she’s great and it was a great show, I can’t believe it was 20 years ago.’
