Newcastle 4-1 Rochdale
NEWCASTLE will host Oxford United in the fourth round of the FA Cup after easing past Rochdale in their third-round replay at St James’ Park.
Any hopes of the League One strugglers producing a famous upset proved short-lived, with Steve Bruce’s side effectively wrapping up the tie with three goals in the opening 26 minutes.
Their first on 17 minutes came courtesy of Rochdale’s Eoghan O’Connell, the defender poking Matt Ritchie’s curling cross past keeper Robert Sanchez and into his own net.
Matty Longstaff doubled Newcastle’s advantage three minutes later after taking down Ritchie’s cross with a superb first touch before spinning and lashing the ball home.
A howler from Sanchez gifted Miguel Almiron a third. Rochdale’s efforts playing out from the back ended in disaster as the goalkeeper gifted the ball to the Paraguayan who fired home from eight yards.
Joelinton made it four with his first goal at St James’ Park six minutes from time before a late consolation for Rochdale, as Jordan Williams drilled the ball in off the post.
