How useful is GPS in match analysis?
It tells you how far and at what speeds you’ve run in training and in games. It’s a good way of making sure players don’t over or under-train. If you can see you’re running too much in training you can pull that back so you don’t get an injury.
Is the video referee ruining the game?
Some people say they don’t like it as it slows things down but it’s essential to get the right result, especially with so much at stake in an international competition.
Do you use drones in training?
Yes, it’s good to get a bird’s eye view of where you’re supposed to be positionally. In international rugby we can spend 90 minutes a day on our MacBooks doing match analysis. We watch our own performances and there are hours of footage of the opposition as well. We have three full-time people collecting footage analysis for the Welsh team.
Do you use fitness trackers?
They’re a good tool for people who are first starting in the fitness world but if you do it all the time you don’t need them. There’s a place for things like Fitbit but I’ve been doing this for 14 years so I don’t count calories. I can tell if my body needs more food and we weigh ourselves every day.
Do you use any gadgets in the kitchen?
I use a NutriBullet because it’s a quick way of consuming calories. I once put a chicken roast dinner in there. I wasn’t hungry but needed to eat and had to rush off to a press conference so that was the quickest way of consuming a big meal. It was horrific, I wouldn’t recommend it. I need 4,500 calories a day, so doing a smoothie with milk, peanut butter, banana and protein can go up to 1,000 calories, which I can drink in two minutes.
How has the technology for treating injuries changed?
I must have had 20 MRI scans during my career. They’re a lot quicker now than they used to be. I would be in there for about two-and-a-half hours and now it takes 30 minutes. We also use cryotherapy chambers, which use low temperatures to treat symptoms like tissue damage. It’s the same principle as putting a packet of peas on a swelling.
Do you have any fancy features in your car?
I’ve got a Range Rover Sport and I like being able to preheat the seats and the steering wheel via an app when I get up. I like using the adaptive cruise control when I’m going to London — it’s brilliant for long journeys and having the screens on the back of the seats is a godsend. I get peace when I’m driving my 18-month-old daughter to soft play as she’ll be watching CBeebies.
How smart is your home?
I’ve got a Nest. It’s so easy to change the temperature in your house from your phone. I used to be a bit of a technophobe with that stuff but I love being able to sort out my heating before I get home.
