The parenting vlogger, 34, on how to take the best selfie and her tips for success

What gadgets help you with parenting?

I let my daughters Pearl, two, and Darcy, eight, play apps on my phone. They like Palace Pets and Pearl watches Peppa Pig. Darcy has a tablet but I don’t give her access to the internet. She also has a Spacetalk watch that she loves.

If you could invent any gadgets to make motherhood easier, what would they do?

A device to translate baby gurgles into what they want to say, a self-securing car seat and a high chair that cleans itself.

Can you recommend three gadgets for vloggers?

The Canon G7X Mark II, the Mark II has better auto focus than the Mark III. A lightweight tripod and a MacBook Pro with Final Cut Pro editing software. Final Cut is really easy to use. I sit in front of a window and use natural light. People aren’t looking for high-quality editing and production from me, they just want the chit-chat.

Any tips for taking selfies?

Stand in front of a window facing the light — cloudy light is better than bright sunlight – and look at the lens, not into your own eyes. It’s more flattering if you hold the camera slightly above your eyeline. And take hundreds of pictures, not just one or two.

How did you start your career?

I was a receptionist. I started on social media in 2009 and left my job in 2011 to go on maternity leave, when I decided to try to earn a part-time salary from my social media endeavours. It took a few years to make a full-time salary from it.

Any tips?

Make content you love and provide something useful, funny, entertaining or interesting. Social media is social, it’s about people, and the tech is just a vehicle for that. If you can do those things consistently you’ll succeed.

What’s an appropriate age for kids to have a social media account?

Every parent has to find the right fit. I’m happy for my children to have tech that doesn’t have full internet access — so we’re a long way off from social media accounts. The guideline age is 13 but people are different so parents have to gauge things for themselves.

Do you use any beauty gadgets?

A Foreo Luna, which is a sonic cleanser. It makes your skin feel lovely. I also use a Glamcor mirror, which lights up.

What travel gadgets do you use?

I’ve got an Away carry-on suitcase that charges your phone. If your phone runs out of battery you just plug it into the suitcase and voilà.
