Muslim mum takes on man ‘ranting at Jews on train’

Hero: Asma Shuweikh confronts the man after he starts ranting at young boys with their dad (below)

A MUSLIM mum who confronted a man allegedly directing anti-Semitic abuse at two young Jewish boys and their dad on the London Underground has said she ‘wouldn’t hesitate to do it again’.

Asma Shuweikh has been hailed a ‘hero’ after stepping in as the trio in skull caps were being verbally attacked by a man while travelling on a Northern line train at midday on Friday.

A suspect was held in Birmingham on Saturday on suspicion of committing a racially aggravated public order offence and yesterday remained in custody, police said.

Mobile phone footage of the incident shows a man in a baseball cap reading anti-Jewish bible passages to the children and threatening their father before Ms Shuweikh steps in.

‘He was quite aggressive and getting in my face,’ she said. ‘I would have loved more people to come up and say something, because if everyone did, I do not think it would have escalated.’

Ms Shuweikh said she knew she ‘had to confront him’ when she saw what was happening.

‘Being a mother-of-two, I know what it’s like to be in that situation and I would want someone to help if I was in that situation,’ she added.

She got off the Tube after two stops and did not realise the video had gone viral until a friend told her she had seen her on Twitter. She then created an account to see the reaction, and has been ‘overwhelmed’ by the response.

Londoner Ms Shuweikh said she knows what it is like ‘to be attacked and dehumanised’ for her faith and, although she did not know the Jewish family, ‘I couldn’t just watch this happen to another family with young children’. She said she hopes the video shows others that ‘racial abuse has no place in our city and will not be tolerated’.

She added: ‘It was so heartwarming to see the responses and see what people were saying. But I would not hesitate to do it again.’

Commuter Chris Atkins, who filmed the incident, said: ‘The Muslim woman didn’t take any s*** from him and really took him to task, very firmly and persistently.

‘In this day and age, we are told how intolerant everyone is and all religions hate each other and there you had a Muslim woman sticking up for some Jewish children.’
