Mum’ll kill me… driver banned in new crackdown

A TEENAGE motorist is believed to have become the first person to lose their licence under stricter penalties for using mobile devices at the wheel.

The 19-year-old Ford Focus driver said, ‘my mum’s going to kill me’ after police caught him taking his eyes off the road to consult a GPS while searching for a repair garage in Abingdon, Oxfordshire.

Penalties and fines for offenders have doubled to six points and £200 under the new law — and new drivers lose their licence if they get six points in their first two years on the road.

Other motorists caught on the first day of the new regime yesterday included a journalist who was on her way to a Thames Valley Police event held to publicise the crackdown.
