More than three million dash cams helping convict dangerous drivers

DASH cam footage is helping police forces across the UK to convict dangerous drivers, new data suggests, with the total number of motorists with dash cams fitted to their vehicles estimated to have passed the three million mark.

Leading dash cam brand Nextbase launched the National Dash Cam Safety Portal (NDCSP) in July 2018. The online system allows drivers to share dash cam footage of dangerous driving with the police.

At present, 28 of the 39 police forces in England are signed up to the NDCSP. Nextbase says 10,000 clips have been uploaded to it so far, with around 50 per cent leading to a conviction.

The figures were given exclusively to BBC Inside Out by Nextbase. Motoring expert Quentin Willson told the programme: ‘We need a kind of army of eyes in the 37million cars on the roads in the UK… and having dash cams there as a deterrent, where people know ‘I could be on camera, I need to behave myself’… it will save potentially hundreds of lives.’

The increasing prevalence of dash cams and their footage being sent to police forces could become a problem, though, the BBC reports. There’s some fear police forces will be overwhelmed with clips from drivers and will not have the resources needed to examine every one of them.

On this point, lawyer Nick Freeman, colloquially known in the media as ‘Mr Loophole’, commented: ‘The danger is the whole system will be saturated and the police will just give up because they won’t be able to afford the resources to sift through and work out “Actually this is really bad and we need to pursue it” and “That’s just not worthy of looking at”.’
