THEY may not be on the battlefield but Ministry of Defence staff have been crushed in doors, injured by body armour and disabled by a computer.
The department has paid out £53million in compensation over incidents affecting service personnel and £15million to its civilian staff in the past year, according to records from the Health and Safety Executive.
These include a host of parachuting and training ground injuries but also sports accidents — including the person who broke their toe kicking a punch bag. One officer suffered severe injuries when his driver ran over his foot.
A hapless employee suffered muscle strain after putting on a heavy set of body armour. In MoD offices, a woman was crushed by security doors and is thought to have broken her ribs.
One office worker was diagnosed with RSI after allegedly not using a computer mouse properly while another staff member was signed off with stress after realising they were likely to meet a former colleague.
The claims were logged by safety officers who record serious incidents for the Health and Safety Executive.
